WHY CONSIDER MICROWAVE?
Wireless, and specifically microwave links, are very well established and
highly reliable, and they are terrain independent providing that you have a
line-of-sight. Although its use for computer traffic transmission is a new application, it is still digital data, like phone traffic. Most phone calls still go through one or more microwave links going across or between countries.
WHAT BENEFITS DOES MICROWAVE OFFER?
Microwave links can generally be deployed fairly rapidly, and subsequently redeployed if necessary. They can be a one off capital purchase, without ongoing lease costs, providing a retained investment. They offer highly
cost-effective solutions in many circumstances and can offer a rapid
pay-back when compared to a leased circuit or digging a trench.
WHAT DATA SPEEDS AND DISTANCES ARE POSSIBLE?
From Nx64KBS, through Nx2MBS, wirespeed network traffic at 10MBS, 34MBS, up to 155MBS, depending on the link type employed. Also
distances from 100m to 100Km can be covered, again depending on link
type.
HOW DO LINKS PERFORM IN BAD WEATHER?
Wireless link systems are designed by manufacturers to provide > 99.
99% statistical availability (typically 99.999% in fact). If installed
within the parameters set then microwave links offer outstanding
resilience to rain, fog and snow, and certainly as reliable as cable.
HOW SECURE ARE MICROWAVE LINKS?
In truth much more so than traditional cable. Firstly, narrow beams up in
the air are very difficult to intercept and secondly many systems have
built in encryption (or it may be added).
IS THERE ANY HEALTH HAZARD?
No. Links used for commercial operation run very low powers
(typically 20mW).
IS PLANNING PERMISSION A PROBLEM?
No. Most links for commercial use are very small and discrete, not
unlike CCTV cameras
