Wayne Rumley, Perlos

The Customer

Perlos Limited, Tyne & Wear, operates at the exclusive end of the
plastics market providing a one-stop-shop for the design and manufacture
of precision made mould tools, plastics components and automatically assembled products. It specialises in the world class sectors of telecommunications and information technology, and has a long track
record in co-operation with automotive and technical customers.

Established in 1984, it has recently expanded into two, new,
state-of-the-art environmentally controlled manufacturing facilities with
almost 12,000 sq. metres of production space.

The Requirement

Perlos was experiencing poor network performance. Speed was slow
and their connection intermittent. As they increased their network traffic
, things went from bad to worse. Perlos could not find a solution to this
problem and needed to call in the experts.

The Challenge

Following a detailed assessment carried out by one of KBR's networking
and cabling experts it was clear that Perlos had some serious problems
caused by a poor installation. Rather than the added expense of an entirely
new cabling infrastructure KBR suggested they fix the main problem areas; patch panels, outlets and switches.

The Solution

Cat 5 cables that had previously been sellotaped and stapled to walls
were rep-installed. All face plates were changed and properly terminated.
This in itself provided a dramatic increase in network performance. Steel trunking was used to segregate power cables from voice and data cables, which had previously been laid side by side. Hubs, which had previously
been fixed to the wall, were moved to more secure cabinets and new containment was used throughout.

The Benefits

The improvement in performance from the new cabling infrastructure was incomparable. All the problems vanished overnight and the speed increased
ten fold. Perlos was so impressed with the work that KBR had done they
went on to use them to cable a further two buildings and to purchase PC's, servers, communications hardware and maintenance.
